"The power of myth and art is this magical ability to open doors, to make connections -- not only between us and the natural world, but between us and the rest of humanity. Myths show us what we have in common with every other human being, no matter what culture we come from, no matter what century we live in. . . . and at the same time, mythic stories and art celebrate our essential differences."
--Alan Lee

Awn ni o ma i le uchel,, ................................We will go from here to a high place,
Draw i ffridd yr adar ffraeth; .......................Over to the field of the glad birds;
Rhown ein dwylo ar hen delyn, ...................We will place our hands on an old harp,
Efo clustiau llym rhwng y trum a'r traeth; .....With sharp ears between the ridge and the beach;
Wnawn ni ddisgwyl, .....................................We will await,

MY BACKGROUND:

I'm entranced by the music of Life. In my particular life, I am trying to cultivate "sharp ears" that penetrate to the heart of the matter, be it my own authentic voice, or to the deeper songs in the land-- a way of walking softly on a landscape filled with numinous and luminous presences. American by birth, but in a culture defined by its media and materialism, it was my ancestors that gradually became focus for me, not as idle fantasy or romanticism, but instead springing from a desire to learn and tell their stories. This has led me to genealogy, something I now offer as a friend-to-friend service, but perhaps one day, it will become my occupation.

My family is mainly of Scots-Welsh (the largest part), English, German and Cherokee origins. I can't help being drawn to their history, culture, languages, and philosophies. I was raised in NC, home to the Cherokees, but also home to my Scots-Welsh ancestors going back before the American Revolution. Thankfully I was able to explore and work with those ancestral energies while I was there, but now my education brought me to Wales, (happily) studying the Welsh language at Bangor University. This is where my hiraeth has led me for now. I hope to continue on with a BA in Welsh Studies, and am also looking into doing some courses in counselling.

Overall, I think of myself as just one more person seeking to be happy and to live life to the fullest. Isn't that what we're supposed to do anyway? I wish to be myself and die without regrets.

Other Beliefs/Practices
My interest is to align myself and my path with the natural land and spirit-scapes of the places I walk , the places my ancestors have walked, and also those places of my past. I think that whichever of these is most pertinent to who I am will surface as I explore.

This means that I have a strong focus on the Celtic and Germanic peoples and their beliefs/customs--history, mythology, and archetypes being my main focus--not the specific details, but looking at them through Jungian, Polytheistic and Eco-Psychologies.

At the same time, I want to make the most of the changing forces within and around me, and to become familiar with ever-new territories in my "self". For this, I use a lot of meditation and trance techniques, many which are found in Shamanism, Buddhism, even the Nordic seid-craft. Ritual, divination, reading, dancing, and many other things are a large part of this, but I feel that even mundane acts like washing dishes or darning socks can be made into "sacred" acts and lessons.

Other spiritual interests include feminine mystics, the Ceile De (Celtic Christianity), Hinduism and Taoism, Sufism, and any sort of indigenous or local beliefs of places I live or visit. I try to be as open-minded as possible.

I consider myself to be an animist in the true sense of the word--to the point that I talk to everything and view even things like trees, chairs, rocks, houses, etc all as being imbued with their own "deity". For this, I am very careful of what I say out loud (haha, seriously) and also what I do.

Rite of Passage

As a young person myself, coming up to my own coming-of-age ritual in February, I have spent a lot of thought on this subject. I think that there can be two kinds of coming-of-age.

1. The first one is a general one, which foremost is an acknowledgment of the young person as now an adult (and this is important) ... by the other adults in their lives, particularly those adults who have helped them or contributed to the young person's development. This is significant because it gives the young per… Continue

Love and Relationships -- My Thoughts

This was my post on the Yearnings of the Heart paganspace group .... but thought I'd repost it here as a blog because I wanted to share it with more people and friends.

As Bill Plotkin points out:

“… the problem has not been masculinity but rather immaturity. The solution is not to make femininity more important than masculinity but to create a soulcentric society in which mature men and women are more prevalent than lifelong adolescents.” (pg 207, Nature and the Human Soul)

I'm prett… Continue

A BIG THANK YOU

... to everyone who wished me a happy 21st birthday recently. I was really really touched by the response of complete strangers, and felt the kinship of fellow-pagans and similar-thinkers.

My birth-day turned out to be one of the best ever in this particular life, and I was so happy! I spent the morning in bed with a big hot cup of coffee and rose/violet cremes (mmmm) reading birthday cards, as well as browsing various forums and websites like Facebook, or the OBOD forums or Druidic Dawn. I was… Continue
