On My Latest Project

So, because I don't have enough to do :) I'm a full-time writer. Except the past year or so I haven't been writing as much as reading, and note-taking, and, in short, researching.

Then I realized that what I had thought was one book was really three. This happens, but it still set me back a bit.

THEN I stared for awhile, overwhelmed. Then I got to outlining, and then stared some more.

Well, now I'm writing. Right now I'm basically blocking chapters with the quotes from various sources that I… Continue

Thoughts on Godhar/Gythjur

Let me start off, O Gentle Reader, with a caveat and a definition. First, the caveat: I'm likely to sound a little bit Cranky with this blog post. You'll probaby see why, but I figured I should let you know at the outset, so you can skip right along if you don't want to hear it. Fair's fair. Second, the definition: Godhar is the plural of godhi; gythjur is the plural of gythja. Both refer to a very specific sort of leader in pre-Christian Iceland (and even a bit after), in charge of both the sec… Continue

Yule and Developing Traditions

The air grows crisp (well, aside from today, when it's been a murky-humid fifty degrees or so) and the holidays approach...

Yule is one of the most important - if not THE most important - heathen holy days. We have mention of it in all of our source material. It's a multi-day affair, generally beginning with mother's night and ending twelve days later (well, where did you THINK the 12 days of Christmas came from?), or beginning on the solstice and ending twelve days later, or even both.

In any… Continue

Father of Storms

Father of storms can you hear me?
As into this battle I roar
Come tonight I shall sup in Valhalla
And raise horns with my kinsmen once more.

I have followed my lord, I have been a true man
I have taken and traded, I’m strong
I have thralls of my own, I have good farming land
I’m a warrior of no small renown.

Father of storms can you hear me?
That’s my husband you host in your hall
You have taken him far from his family
There’s naught left but his spear on the wall.

All the days came and went… Continue

Oaths and Oathbreaking

This is one I've been mulling over in my head for awhile, and Skallagrimsson mentioned it in another blog post I wrote, so I thought I would blog out some of my thoughts...

Let's start here:

In Asatru/heathenry, one of the most important factors is Reputation. There are those who feel that this is because we come from a shame-based society, but I disagree with them. We are really a *reputation* based society. Considering ourselves shame-based means we focus on shame and/or its avoidance, and f… Continue

From Catholicism to Asatru

This article, by Ingiborg, tells of her story from Christianity to Asatru:

http://www.geocities.com/ingwibergo/brnagain.html

And reading it inspired me to put my own story in place on my blog. In some ways my tale is very similar to anyone who came from a monotheist faith into paganism/heathenry, and in some ways it varies - a thing I suppose we can all say, really. In any event, I don't hide much anymore, and I've told this tale in various other places, so why not do it here?

I was born...(O… Continue

Learn to Breathe and Call Me in a Year...on Teaching Esotera

We can probably also call this "The Seidhwoman Rants," but there's a lovely gentleman whose website is titled 'The Seidhman Rants' and I don't want o confuse me with him - nor to confuse you, Gentle Reader, any more than I already do...

For those new to me and this blog, I have been doing "the spooky mambo" for a long time. I had my first full-on possessory experience at age twelve. I'm a natural medium, and an empath. I've got the raw psychic that comes from prophetic dreams, occasional flashe… Continue

An Animist/Heathen Approach to Storms

This is going to have to be brief - unless I type fast - because Tropical Storm Hannah is travelling up-coast and I, suspicious of all technology, want to be off the computer before she arrives. Still - if you'll pardon the pun this has been swirling through my head these past few days, and it's a topic that comes up again and again (at least, in my brain it does!).

I once had an atheist friend of mine ask me if I thought thunder was Thor killing giants, or if I thought it was a response to mol… Continue

East Coast Thing 2008

This was the TENTH annual East Coast Thing. I'm proud to have been there, and as always am amazed by our local community.

I can only give highlights here - it's an event you have to be at to understand - but hopefully this will give a good flavor for our community-based religion.

Thursday

Arrived early to lots of welcoming hugs. Set up the Freyja shrine next to the Uppsala Ve - Raven Kindred North (the host kindred this year) raised carved god-posts of Thor, Odin, and Frey. Into the holes for… Continue

The Freyja Shrine

A bit of history...

Long but not too long ago, in a mind not terribly far away, there formed an Idea...

Denise Bowen, a good friend, bear-sister, and awesome fellow heathen, wanted to create a special something for Freyja. I'll leave all the details as to why and how that happened to her, since it's her story, but I will say this - Denise now has a loving husband and a fantastic son. Mmm-hmm, she says knowingly. In any event, Denise Bowen created the first incarnation of the Freyja shrine. She… Continue

Oh, yes--I remember seeing that oicture before--very lovely! We live in an apartment for the time being, but I hope that if we ever inherit my father's house, he has a nice chunk of land, I would enjoy making different sanctuaries outside in the yard. It's ashamed, though, because I had in the past when we took vacations, collected many shells and Petosky stones out in real Nature (as oppossed that I had bought the mussels from the store for dinner! lol) and all of my findings are either lost in the shuffle or have been unknowingly tossed out when my dad cleared out his garage where I had kept these ever the years.

Many blessings, Patricia! Have a wonderful weekend.

20 minutes is definitely reasonable. I Googled it, and have the directions, so as soon as I get settled in, I'll have to head over there. =] I appreciate the response. Thank you. <3
