It is difficult to understand the Celts from today's point of view. This is due largely to the fact that their understanding of the world was so different from the modern view of things. The Celts originated from the area around the Caspian Sea in...

The relevance of the Ragnarok

We can find hope and inspiration through an understanding of the old religious sagas of our forefathers. In particular the Ragnarok saga contains much that we can relate to in the world we live in today.

The Norsemen saw their gods as finite beings. The Aesir had a beginning, so, logically, they also have an end. They were not regarded as perfect but had their faults and foibles. In the person of the perfidious Loki, they tolerated evil within their realm which was a most costly mistake. It was… Continue

Digest Number 268

GODS
For many years the debate on what, or who, were the first gods of man raged. Great comparisons have been made between the
gods of the North and the gods of the Greeks and Romans. Personally I find the gods of Romans and Greeks lacking any
relationship with the Norse gods. So have the sources I've read. They suggest that the gods of the Greeks that were prototype
for Roman gods, were in fact taken from an earlier set of gods. Is this possible? Well, let's look at their argument.. Professor

Borr and his sons

My thoughts are by no means final on this but the lore in relation to Borr has it that Borr had three sons.
1. Odinn (Woden), 2. Ve (Weh), 3. Vili (Wille)

In relation to Buri (Borr's father) , the lore has it that Buri has three grandsons.
1. Odinn (Woden), 2. Hoenir, 3. Lodur.

This two bits are in either in disarray or it is the same brothers, as individuals,
mentioned by different names. If it is the latter, then

1. Odinn=Odinn
2. Hoenir=Ve
3. Lodur=Vili
Now the meaning of the names in each… Continue

Heathenism and Self-defense

Self-defense is very much a part of the heathen religion and this is one reason why.

"A wayfarer should not walk unarmed,
But have his weapons to hand:
He knows not when he may need a spear,
Or what menace meet on the road."

Throwing a whetstone

Totally stealing this from http://www.hurstwic .org/history/ articles/ mythology/ myths/text/ hrungnir. htm: "One should not throw a whetstone, because doing so makes the whetstone in Þór's head move, causing him discomfort." That seems like a superstition. .. I can also use my imagination and say that, between the phallic shape of a whetstone and the fact that all whetstone was created from a shard of Hrungnir's broken weapon, there seems to be a procreative aspect to the story. The sorceress w… Continue
