About Me:
My home computer is dead, and work has this site firewalled, so please email me directly, if you'd like to contact me. michele.briere@yahoo.com. I'm hoping I'll be back online by the end of January. I'm getting a laptop for myself for my birthday. :D

Babylon Rising is an on-line Pagan lecture series. Once or twice a month a new topic will be posted. If you comment and get into discussions, it's a lot more fun. Topics will range from beginners to adepts; if you don't understand something, please jump into the fray and ask.

Favorite Books
Stranger in a Strange Land, Sumerian Mythology, Treasures of Darkness, Myths of Enki, a guilty pleasure in those really stupid Dark Hunter books, and anything else that catches my interest. Mostly scifi.
Beliefs / Practices
Pagan
Other Beliefs/Practices
Sumerian has nothing to do with the Necro or Sitchen; those two items are complete nonsense and I stand by my opinion. This is a very ancient pantheon and they are more animistic/shamanic than anything else. Ask me.
Hobbies
Reading, writing scifi, studying my Path, drooling over John Barrowman (http://www.johnbarrowman.com / http://johnsaltar.angelfire.com), Torchwood
Heroes
Anyone who reaches out beyond their own comfortable box to help others.
Likes
Honesty, the sound of the breeze in the trees, and the perfection of the kitten's tiny paws.
Dislikes
Two-faced people, gossipers, abusers, posers.

Fall Changes

This fall has been seriously wiggy. It's been one thing after another, which is enough to upset my OCD, but I understand that the gods have spoken so I'm doing my best to go along with the changes in order to best serve Them.

Currenly, we are working on two networking groups here in Phoenix. One is for GLBT Pagans, and the other is for those of us who just don't fit well with the general Pagan population. We are not your standard, European wiccan-celtic types, we don't use a Celtic calendar for… Continue

To Be or Not to Be... A Pagan

When I was five years old, my mother was getting ready to meet my step-father at a Christmas party at his office. Mom put my 2-year old brother to bed and left to go and get the babysitter. She said she’d be gone only 15 minutes or so, and made me look at the clock on the wall and tell her what the hands for 15 minutes would be. Not five minutes after she left, I went into complete melt-down. I was convinced that she had slid off the road into a snowbank and we were all alone. Don’t go callin

Destruction Precedes Renewal

by Rumi:

"A man started to break up the earth with a spade.
A fool came and shouted at him, "Why are you ruining the
soil?"
"You idiot!" the man cried. "Go away and don't bother me!
Understand the difference between destrucion and growth.
How could this soil become a rose garden or wheat field
Before it's broken up and ruined and made ugly?
How could it become orchards and harvests and leaves
and fruit
Before it is utterly destroyed and worn down?
Before you pierce an abscess with a knife
How c… Continue

Shunumun / Dumuzi

This is the 4th month, which begins New Moon May thru New Moon June. On the Standard Mespotamian Calendar, it is called Du'uzu; named for Dumuzi. In Nippur, a much older calendar, with names that are more Sumerian than they are Babylonian, the month is called Shunumun. This is the month of seed sowing, when the fields are prepared by removing stones and clods from the furrows, weeding, and hoeing. The barely fields have just been sown, and now the fields must be prepared for the fruits and vines… Continue

Ancestors of the gods

This is a brief commentary from another site. I'll get around to expanding in it probably this weekend.

On pages 106 and 107 of Mark Cohen's book Cultic Calendars, discussing the Nippur month of du-ku, there is commentary about Enlil's ancestors. Duku is the 7th month in Nippur, named for the Sacred Mounds and the festival to them. The Sacred Mound is described as the place where Enlil's ancestors dwelt. "There laments were like laments which Enlil's ancestors perform in the awe-inspiring duku,… Continue
