Strawberries and Cream

I joined a CSA this year for the first time. CSA stands for Community Sponsored Agriculture and you pay up front for a share of the harvest, and pick up your vegges each week. Last week we picked up strawberries, as well as asparagus, lettus, salad turnips. Well as it turns out, my chickens also love Strawberries!! I fed them the left over strawberry tops and even my shy roos are eatting out of my hand!! Also, I made whipped cream from actual cream the other day. It's so simple... Put a bowl o… Continue

Baby Food and Happy Chickens

Yesterday I made a batch of butternut squash and sweet potato baby food, as I was running low. As I was scraping the seeds out of the butternut squash, I thought how my chickens might enjoy the guts and seeds. So I scooped it all into my hands and marched out to my deck, calling the chickens. Boy were they excited about squash seed! They got all excited, even the roosters who are normally quite wary of me. Even the shy leghorn hens came up to me to get some seeds. They started making their quite… Continue

"Quaint" Paganism

I found a term I like to describe my flavor of Wicca. It's not quite a tradition, but more of a "life style" that is optional and could be applied to other kinds of Pagans. If you are a "Quaint" Pagan, you strive to live sustainably with the earth. You are cautious about what technologies you use. You might avoid using disposable products. You avoid materialism in favor for "Living Simply". You might raise your own livestock or garden. You reduce, reuse, and recycle. You might make your own clo… Continue

Celebrating Beltane in the tradition of KISS

(KISS is Keep it simple stupid) Vincent had a baseball game, so we celebrated with some athletics until it decided to really rain. We came home, my hubby dished out brownie sundays with strawbery revel ice cream (in the big tub from wall mart...what can I say I love the plastic tubs, I always find a use for them!) and talked about Beltane, and we read the chapter on Beltane from "The Green Prince's Father" by Miles Batty. Later that evening I was inspired to decorate an egg shaped wreath I woun… Continue

Double Rainbow

Last week it rained quite a bit, and while I was out at the dollar store, and as I stepped out the door I thought, this is the perfect weather for a rainbow, and as I looked behind the store, there was this amazing double rainbow! I wish I had a camera! I Love rainbows! I have sun catchers in my bathroom that cast rainbows all over my bath room. I wish I had a few more all over the house. Dove Continue

Little Leage

Vincent is now in Little League and enjoying himself. He was a bit nervous at practice, but he's really catching on (pun intended) to the game. He's in coach pitch, which is really uses a pitching machine. The boys get 6 chances to hit off the machine and then they can use the T as a last resort. Vincent has been getting better at hitting off the machine, and made a run without using the T at the last game. He's also paying better attention to the game, and much less nervous. I'm so glad he look… Continue

Chicken Feathers as Symbols for the God and Goddess

I've been doing a bit of research, when I can grab 5 minutes to myself, on Kitchen Witchery. I have a copy of "The Wheel of the Year" by Pauline Campanelli which I haven't picked up in a long long time. When I first bought it, I was a college student, and it didn't much pertain to my life then, but boy does it now. It's all about gardening and nature, and there was even some interesting info on chicken feathers........ The curved tail feathers of roosters are called "Sickles" and apparently the… Continue

A Day with the Chickens

Today I spent most of the morning outside with my baby Julian, my brother in law, and my older son, Vincent. Zack (BIL), who is 12, is visiting for his Easter vacation and is fascinated by my chickens. So I've taught him how to care for them and check for eggs, and how to catch them. I took the time to brush my Siberian husky who is shedding like crazy right now. The chickens decided that today is a good day for a dirt bath, they like to dig a small hole and roll around in the dirt, it's rather… Continue

Our First Turtle Rescue of the Year

Driving home from our errands today I spotted a turtle crossing the road, and like a good nature lover, we stopped to help him or her across the road. Since I had Vincent in the car with me, I brought the turtle over to the car to show him off before setting him in the grass. I was taught by my parents that turtles are smart enough to know which way they want to go, so when you put them down, you have to put then on the side of the road they were trying to reach. I hope we find more turtles this… Continue

Chamomille Tea

This week I planted chamomile for tea. I usually flavor my ice tea with chamomile or mint to change the flavors. We drink alot of tea, and I make a gallon of it about every other day, with about 1/3 cup walmart brand splenda for sweetness. To compare it to soda, it comes to about 25 cents/2 liters. We gave up soda (except for special occations) a few months back. If I need caffine, I brew some coffee. Any way, this is my first time growing chamomile and I'm excited! I'll let you all know when it… Continue

I found an out of print book at Paperbackswap.com!

I've been looking for a book on Astrology called "The Knot of Time" and I just found a hard back copy of it at Paper Back Swap while browsing Tarot books! I happened to have a credit, so I ordered it! I'm so tickled. I also ordered "Where to Park Your Broomstick" to review for Pooka's Sandbox! Happy Happy Joy Joy! Dove Continue

A Birthday Spell

Since my oldest son has turned 7 I thought I should do something special at his party, something spiritual. What do you think of this idea... On his cake I will light the number 7 candle, and then ask all the people older than seven to come up, light normal birthday candle from the number 7 candle and make a wish for Vincent, like... "I wish that Vincent be good at baseball." or "I wish that Vincent learns to listen with compassion." Something like that. And then he will have to blow out all… Continue

Snow Ice Cream Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1Ar-Zbn9TI It snowed here yesterday, and today which is my son's 7th birthday, we made the snow ice cream recipe. It's tasty but not quite ice cream, more like Italian Ice. I told my son, the snow is like a birthday present from the Goddess..... we don't get allot of snow here. Dove Continue

My mom is visiting this weekend

We are planning to do some freezer cooking, that's making a bunch of food and freezing it. We are making chicken burritos and cheeseburger and fries casserole. She's also bringing some cloth to make a saddle for my two hens. No, I'm not planning on riding them, a saddle is a protective cover because my rooster is riding them too much and he's puling out their feathers on their back. Roos are quite mean, and not really content unless he has 10 hens, and mine has only six. Next year we will breed… Continue

A day in the life of a homesteading housewife

After breakfast, it's so warm out today, I brushed our sibearian husky for like 15 minutes, creating clouds of wafting hair all over the back yard. I'm sure all the birds building nests will appreciate the donation. Then I worked on the chickens...I have two flocks, a meat flock and a layer flock with a total of 15 birds. I needed to clean out their water containers and refill them. "Lucky" our keeper roo (that's rooster for all yall city folk.) has been acting up. He attacked me several times,… Continue

Humm, a first post....

This week I need to do some writing for Pooka Pages. I'm having trouble finding books to review, and I can't keep buying books. I did order a book from the Spiral Scouts page, I forget the title, but it's a fundraiser, so I just had to buy the book. It won't be here until next week, but it should be good, it focuses on the male divinity, and with two sons, I'm all about finding books that aren't ultra feminine. I'm also going to write about Astrology and how it can be useful in planning rituals… Continue
