I have had several people ask me this question, and since I currently do not have any students I have a little free time to post on here ........ so here goes ......

Choosing a Magical (Magickal) Name

Well for many people the name comes to them through meditation or dreams. Sometimes it is given to them when they join a religious order, such as a Circle, Coven, Grove, or Temple by the Priest, Priestess, Shaman, or Magus in charge. The name could be anything that you feel drawn to, have an affinity for, or even some quality you want to strive for, or a combination of several of these aspects.

Here are some things to think about:
What are you interested in?
Do you have any totem animals? an affinity for any animals? and it does not have to be an animal at all.
Your Name can describe you, or an aspect of you.
Your Astrology sign, be it Western, Egyptian, Vedic, or Chinese Astrology Systems.
Your element (earth, air, fire, water, spirit),
Birthstone, or any Rock or Mineral you are drawn to,
Your name can reflect your status; Seeker, Novice, Apprentice, Witch, Magus, etc.
Your name in another language that reflects your path; Hebrew, Gaelic, Italian, Egyptian etc.

Examples:
Spiritual Warrior,
Shadow Rooster,
Midnight Jade,
Earth Fairy,
Star Child,
Lunar Dragon,
Fire Hawk,
Inanna's Initiate,
or Whatever calls to you.

Just remember whatever name you choose, this name is special, sacred, and holds meaning for only you, & words have power so choose wisely, there is no hurry .......

Now, I know people who have more than one magickal name and there are many reasons for this.

Some people have 1 name for public pagan use, and a secret name they use only when they meditate, commune with their guardian spirit, or divine, and when they write in their journal/Book of Shadows, or preform magical workings, spells or rituals. This secret name stays private and they do not openly share it with very few if any people, because it has power for them.
Some Pagans have 1 name they use only with a closed group they belong to and another for their other Pagan dealings, such as use on websites like this one where they do not want to use their "official" Magical name.
Sometimes people outgrow the original name they chose because they have gained knowledge along their path and they feel the need add to, or completely change their name to reflect the changes.

My real Name is Catherine and for years I went by Cathy ....... when I became Pagan I was getting divorced and needed a change. When I was a kid, my Dad called me kitten, and sometimes Kit-Cat ..... Also my spirit animal is a Cougar and sometimes a Panther, ..... Cat fits me and is special to me. I am Cat!

Oh and in case any of you are wondering about the name High ...... that is my maiden name & I went back to it after the divorce. No hidden meanings there, it just sounds cool.

I hope this helps some of you new seekers on the path.

Take care, & Blessings, Cat =^o^=

Lilith Wolfstear Comment by Lilith Wolfstear on October 27, 2008 at 1:30pm
I was in an abusive relationship years ago, living on Hampton Beach NH. I was trying to hold on to my faith, my ex was controlling, he'd burn my books, cut my ties to my friends and family. One night after a huge fight with him I had cried myself to sleep. I had a dream about Lilith. It was strange, because I never normally gave her a second thought. She came to me in my dream and told me that she was a part of me, to be strong, that I would survive him and move on. I woke up feeling empowered, and secure, like her arms were wrapped around me. Long story short I did research on her many origins, and found her to be much like myself. I chose Wolfstear myself, wolf being my totem animal, and tear, well, because I was crying for the welfare of the earth.

Thank you, this has been most helpful as well! I am struggling with my name so I haven't chosen one yet. Now I might be able to pick one soon!

this has been so helpful! especially since I didn't even have to think about it at all before one of my names fell in my lap! I've been working with a certain crystal when I meditate or use my tarot deck, and I felt a little spiritual push to adopt its name as my own. reciprocating power...
blessed be!
Doshia Paratine Llywelyn Comment by Doshia Paratine Llywelyn on October 9, 2008 at 3:30am
You know, I'm at an impasse for a new craft name. My old name was Cashlin Luna Autumnrain; however, I feel as if I've out grown that one. Doshia Paratine Llywelyn are my family names. Doshia is my middle name, Doshia Paratine was my Grandmother's first and middle name and Llywelyn is my other grandmother's last name... I love it so I use it now. Plus, Doshia is such an unusual name you can google it and find me all over the place, which I don't really like. Sorry... off the point.

I'm glad you posted this for I could read over it and remember how I came about my first craft name. For now I'm just going with Doshia Paratine Llywelyn.... but hopefully I'll have my secon incarnation of my real craft name. I may use Autumnrain as my first name. Wow.. I'm blubbering. Sorry. I must have too many things going through my mind this evening!
Love and light to you and yours!
Merry Meet, Merry Part and Brightest Blessings,
Just Doshia *sigh*
