Today I went for a walk down to the end of my street to sit by the river, upon leaving I noticed a pile of eagle feathers, and some were blue and yellow along with a spool of thread and some pins. They looked rather dirty as it seemed they have been there awhile. So my question is, do they leave their items out in the elements for a few days to cleanse them before making one?
Comment by ✮CyN✮ on May 13, 2012 at 8:44pm a native american friend of mine said that it looks like it was destroyed and that finding so many eagle feathers is a great honor.
Comment by Wolfie on May 13, 2012 at 8:55pm Finding them is ok, but do not keep them. Unless you are a recognized elder of a native tradition OR were given one BY a recognized elder, it is illegal to possess them.

Comment by Kixs on May 14, 2012 at 2:03am I can't imagine it is someone making a head dress. Feathers are earned one at a time in my tribe and are very valued. To leave them just laying about, seems very odd. There is no need that I know of to leave them to dry or what you called cleansing.
Another thought they maybe turkey feathers. Alot of the non-natives use them instead of eagle feathers because Wolfie is right, it is illegal for non-natives to possess them, unless they were a gift from a native.
Comment by Copper Tree on May 14, 2012 at 3:13am No Indian I am aware would dye Eagle feathers in this way.I inherited my Grandfather's Chief headdress and these are not wide enough and look nothing like what I have seen. Also they would not be left unattended, and on the ground in this manner.
Comment by ✮CyN✮ on May 14, 2012 at 2:53pm I think I now understand why these were left there. They were left as a memorial to the young natives, over the past few years that came to the city from their reserves to acheive their highschool diplomas, but had disappeared and their bodies were found in the river. So tragic.
