Last Friday night, there was a group of us, about 7 or 8, sitting outside, just having a good old time. While we enjoying ourselves, we noticed that there was an incredibly drunken young Hispanic man walking towards us.

We also noticed that as he approached us he had his hands in the air, then he was kneeling on the ground with them placed behind his head. He was speaking in very broken English saying "Policia, Policia, Policia". We finally figured out that he didn't want us to shoot him or call the police. (Lady Ascension drives a classic VW Bug, her daughter, a beautiful little blonde angel about 7 or 8 years old, was in the car and had pulled the door handle. This sounds remarkably close to the sound of a gun cocking. She had done this just as he had reached the back of the car. So, he apparently thought we had a gun on him.)

We finally got the young man assured we were not going to shoot him and found out that he wanted us to call a taxi for him, which we did. He talked about wanting to go back to Mexico and then wanted Charles to follow him as he walked to the "Church Yard" (Charles has a policy about not following strange men, winking at him, into the dark). He returned with a partial case of Coronas (hmmm...wonder what happened to the rest of them?) As he was sitting on the fence railing asking if it was OK to drink one, then he noticed Santa Muerte through the door of Widdershin's. (Remember the life-size Gold Santa Muerte statue in the front room? In Mexico Santa Muerte is the Spirit of Death.) And of course, Widder was curled up in her lap, napping.

The young man walked over to the door and asked Charles what that was. Charles told him it was Sante Muerte. The young man commented that he had only seen that in Mexico and then asked why she had moved, as he backed away from the door. (Widder had looked up at him and evidently he didn't realize there was a cat there, so he only noticed the movement.) He then told us his name was Charlie and asked what Charles' name was. Misunderstanding what he was asking, Charles said "Santa Muerte", at which point Charlie jumped back from him. (Guess he thought Charles was telling him he was also the Spirit of Death.) We tried to straighten out the misunderstanding on the name, but I don't think we did. I think he thought we were telling him that Sante Muerte was there for him.

He went back and sat down and said that even though he wanted to go back to Mexico, Sante Muerte had just told him not to. Then he began talking about salvation and the more he thought about what he had just "seen", the more anxious he became. Finally, he decided not to wait for the taxi.

He stood up, picked up his case of Coronas, and ran as if the Devil was after him, telling us, "Jesus is coming, in two days, but not here" several times. Then quickly crossed the parking lot, going up the road and into the night.

So, if you are looking for a safe haven when the Christians are 'raptured', just remember Charlie's words, "Jesus is coming, but not here".

You just never know what will happen when you are at Widdershin's!
