Yesterday, my boyfriend and I drove out to see the breath taking Cliffs of Moher.  The park and walkways have changed a good bit since I was there in 2005.  There is a new path off the leftside that was not open before and they've added walkways that are easier to access for people with difficulty climbing so far.  The Cliffs were beautiful and you can see islands in the distance, the Aran Islands--I think.  Where the Land, Sky, and Sea all meet!  It was definitely a magical place even with medium size crowd.

We explored up and down the cliffs and when we were on a path away from the dwindling crowd.  As we walked down hill, I stopped to take one last picture when I finished, he told me to turn around.  I was thinking he wanted me to look at something.  When I turned around he was one knee.  He proposed!!  I was completely shocked,  I only managed to say "Are you serious?" before run up to him and kissing him for like ten minutes.  At some point in that ten minutes he managed to put the ring on me.  We kissed more and laughed.  We finally decided we may have exceeded the Irish PAD limit and began to make our way down the hill.  At which point, while still laughing we realized that he had asked me to marry him and I had said yes without really ever saying a word at all.  I guess when you are that connected, you don't really need words.

What a beautiful place to receive a proposal.

I am irish born and bred and have stood at the cliffs many times, pondering Aillte an Mhothair's (cliffs of Moher's) enormity.

Lots of irish myths and legends about the cliffs of Moher, St Patrick and the Tuatha De Danann, but my favourite tale is that of Mal and Cu Chulainn at Hags Head.

Irish legend tells the story of Mal an old witch hag who fell hopelessly in love with Cu Chulainn. Cu Chulainn did not return her feelings, in fact, disturbed by her attraction, he ran all over Ireland, trying to escape Mal. He finally escaped by jumping back to the Cliffs of Moher using the sea stacks as stepping stones. Mal tried to follow him but not being as nimble as Cu Chulainn, she missed her footing and fell to her death at Hags Head where her blood is said to have stained all the sea....All very tragic, we irish adore a good tale around the fire.

Just wanted to share as the cliffs of Moher are a sacred place for your and your significant other :)

Beannaith.

Thank you so much for sharing the connection to the Cu Chulainn myth.  One thing that has really impressed me with our trip is a realization of deeply tied the old myths are to what I've begun to refer to as "sacred geography".  There are so many beautiful sacred places in Ireland and it seems everywhere we go we are stumbling into places of mythic adventures.
