My father was a seafarer in the South Pacific during World War II. I have some of his memorabilia from his time in the Navy during WWII. I myself tried to get into the Navy but they would not take me. Fortunately, the Army was not as concerned about my criminal record and allowed me to join. It was great fun.
My family roots are from Northern Germany, Kiel to be exact. We were hell raisers back then especially in our youth. I guess I should have pursued my Heathen roots deeper, but my life led me in other directions. The North Sea was once my family’s playground.
Recently the Heathens in the Navy could hold religious services aboard a deployed aircraft carrier. It is nice to see the recognition of are men and women at sea. Njord, the god of seafarers, must have been very pleased.
