Independence Day and the Goddess Columbia

This week we celebrate our nation's Independence from Mother Britain by recognising our very own Goddess, the Lady Columbia!

Columbia is a historical and poetic name used for the United States of America and is also the name of its female personification.

What would the Goddess Columbia's attributes be? Democracy for one - you know; I don't think the Greeks had a Goddess of Democracy- so this is an original! Certainly, Liberty and Justice. The Romans had the Goddess Libertas; plus the Greeks, Romans and the Egyptians has Goddesses of Justice.

Is Columbia a WAR Goddess? Where does our national Darker Side come from?

And finally - naturally, a Goddess has to have a myth, right? I've got an idea for a myth which I'll share with you - we'll see if it's any good.

Hope you enjoy the show!

Some of the music you'll hear on this weeks show include David Byrne: "Independence Day"; Celia Ferran: "Red Alabaster & Blue"; R.E.M.: "Radio Free Europe"; Weather Report: "American Tango"; Gypsie Nomads: "Yes! I'm French" and more.

DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY?

Maybe you've composed a new poem and would like to hear it on the radio. If you want to submit audio to The Spiral Dance, send me an email. There are basically no rules - just no harsh language, no commercial self-promotion and no Christian-bashing. Please let me know what you think about the show. I'm always open to suggestions; email spiraldance1@ excite.com or radiohawthorne@yahoo.com
