The incantation seemed to buzz deep into my head. It concentrated the energy in the room so that it was almost tangible. The amulet in my hands began to get warm and I could see a red light emerge from it. The inscriptions seemed to blaze with fire and my hands cramped as I held it. I held my breath for an instant, holding my intent and visualizing the outcome I wanted, and then I blew my prayer into the clay disk. It was as though a door opened and sucked the concentrated energy into the heart of the amulet. The door sealed and I closed the ceremony.

Magick has been a part of shamanic practice since time immemorial. Sometimes called sorcery or witchcraft (in a derogatory way) by outsiders that did not understand, this was one of reasons early shamans were so feared – and so persecuted. Now, I’m not going to sugar coat the truth and tell you that no shaman ever used magick to harm or for other unethical reasons, but the truth is that shamanism and magick go hand in hand.
