SAN FRANCISCO AREA
The Order of the Pentacle, a Wiccan/Pagan veterans organization sponsored by Circle Sanctuary, is among the sponsors of A Ritual of Remembrance organized by The Pagan Alliance (http://thepaganalliance.org/) on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2009 at the Lafayette War Memorial in the San Francisco Bay area of California, beginning at 11:30 am PDT.
The ritual will be conducted by two Pagan leaders from California, Brighde Indigo, a US Army veteran and member of the Order of the Pentacle, and James A. Bianchi, an attorney and Druid. Pagans of many traditions and organizations will be taking part in the ceremony.
The ritual is open to Pagans and those of other paths. Those planning to take part should gather no later than 11:15 am near the handicapped parking zone behind the Lafayette BART station. If possible, those attending should bring one or more flowers to leave at the site. Participants also are welcome to bring banners, flags, drums, and other ritual tools.
A Ritual of Remembrance will feature the placing of a Pentacle at the memorial in honor of Wiccan soldier Sgt. Jason A. Schumann who was killed May 19, 2007 in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sgt. Schumann, who served in the U.S. Army, died when a bomb exploded near his vehicle in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, about one hundred miles west of Baghdad. He was killed in action less than one month after the US Department of Veterans Affairs finally added the Pentacle to its list of emblems of belief authorized to be included on the grave markers it issues http://www.cem.va.gov/hm/hmemb.asp.
Sgt. Schumann, who lived with his family in Minnesota, is buried at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. His grave is marked with an upright marble headstone with Pentacle, issued by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. More information and photos of Sgt. Schumann and his Pentacle gravestone is on-line: http://www.circlesanctuary.org/liberty/veteranpentacle/jschumann.htm
