My former wife, Carmen, was a bit psychic, and she could see into things with an uncanny ability sometimes. When we were living in Silver Spring, Maryland, our best friends, Mark and Marie, lived in Annapolis, and we would frequently visit each other.

During one weekend visit to them in Annapolis, Mark decided for some reason that he wanted to test my wife's psychic abilities by seeing if we could hold a séance. Carmen had never tried a séance before, so I was a little skeptical about how it would work out. But, the vote was three to one. The séance was on.

It was late in the evening, and in keeping with the way Mark had observed séances conducted in the movies, he turned out the lights and lit some candles. We sat at a dining room table and held hands, and we waited for something to happen. And we kept waiting. And waiting. Marie was sitting to my left, and Mark was sitting right across from me, and after a while they started chatting with each other about something, perhaps starting to give up on the séance. But I kept glancing over at my wife, who was sitting to my right. I noticed that she definitely seemed to be getting sleepy, and her head was nodding. Finally, her head dropped down as though in a trance. Then rather quickly she lifted her head, opened her eyes, and looked straight at Marie. She said something to Marie, but I do not recall the words. My wife's facial expression had changed, and the voice I heard was not hers at all. I do not recall the message, but what she (it) said to Marie was not friendly or cordial at all. I got the impression that whoever was possessing my wife at that time knew Marie from before (perhaps from a previous lifetime), and held some deep grudge against her.

Marie got upset, and Mark and I were startled too. Our exclamations broke up the séance, and Carmen snapped out of it. She recalled nothing. We were all talking with each other about what had just happened, and in a short while it was only Mark and Marie talking with each other. As before, I kept glancing over at my wife, and she was obviously nodding off again. Then she opened her eyes and stared straight at Marie again, and she had this most evil expression on her face. Mark and Marie stopped talking and looked at Carmen. The expression on Carmen's face seemed to be expressive of a deep-seated loathing for Marie. Then my wife leaned forward as though to say something to Marie, but Marie was having none of it. Marie freaked, and started screaming hysterically. She hopped out of her chair and ran to the living room. That broke up the séance, and we all went into the living room and turned on the lights and did our best to change the mood so that Carmen would not be revisited by whoever or whatever that was.

Afterward, even with 20-20 hindsight, Marie never had a clue who that might have been. For that reason I suspected the entity might have known Marie in a previous lifetime, but that was only a guess.

That was Carmen's first séance, and it was also her last. She never even wanted to talk about it after that.

How was the relationship between Marie and Carmen after that episode? Did the unfortunate event have an effect on their relationship?

Mature Witch: Marie and Carmen continued to be close friends just as always.

Awesome: There is no such thing as demonic possession.  When people get possessed, they get possessed by vile, deceased humans who are still between lives.  They seem demonic enough, but strictly speaking, they are human lives.
