Many opinions exist on the the role that Venus, Amore and a host of others play in our lives. While my own philosophy aligns with a close parellel to "If you meet the Buddha on the Road, Kill Him". I have always felt that there are those times when Gibran was in fact closer to the truth.

THEN said Almitra, Speak to us of Love.
And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them.
And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you.
Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.

While it was known a relationship on some level existed between Gibran and Mary Haskell, no one knew to what extent, and it was later revealed upon his death.
Gibran willed the contents of his studio to Mary Haskell. There she discovered her letters to him spanning twenty-three years. She initially agreed to burn them because of their intimacy, but recognizing their historical value she saved them. She gave them, along with his letters to her which she had also saved, to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library before she died in 1964. Excerpts of the over six hundred letters were published in "Beloved Prophet" in 1972.
After reading many of these excerpts, one could only imagine how being so far apart, their love could last. Of course, Shakespeare was well acquainted with this theme and used it often enough throughout his plays and sonnets. "Love in Absence" a timeless theme, is still with us, even today.
