All Beliefs are Welcome Here!

"I am extraordinarily patient,

provided I get my own way in the end."

~ Margaret Thatcher

Today, I pondered "politics," and whether people just being mean-spirited constituted politics. I wanted to say "no, politics and meanness are not necessarily synonymous, because some people are just thoughtless despite any political beliefs."

But then I realized that it is the result of what happens *after* someone says or does mean things that divides people into factions, causing the sides to feel "political."  But sometimes people are just being jerks.

So I went to to see if there was any relationship between behavior and politics, and apparently there is a relationship, including:

  • the complex or aggregate of relationships of people in society, esp those relationships involving authority or power
  • to deal with people in an opportunistic, manipulative, or devious way, as for job advancement.

So let's get down to the nitty gritty of what politics are and what we misunderstand about the benefits of being "political."

Today, randomly pull 2 cards from your favorite tarot or oracle deck and ask:

1) What are politics?

2) What do we misunderstand about the benefits of behaving "politically?"

For my sample reading I used Kat Black's Golden Tarot.

8 of Cups

4 of Cups, reversed

1) What are politics?

Politics are our attempt to organize something into something we understand so we can separate ourselves from something and move toward something we feel better. The cups left behind are experiences we've had, emotional hits one after another, that have felt unstable. So we pack our bags and move on with our reasons. We look at it from another point of view, and feel ourselves repelled from one thing and drawn toward another.

It is taking action and moving away from something after being bothered by it.

2) What do we misunderstand about the benefits of behaving "politically?"

The 4 of Cups is about someone offering something. Reversed, it is a refusal to accept something. It is holding one's ground.

The 4 of Cups is also often defined as "apathy," and reverse it and we have quite the opposite: ACTION.

According to, apathy means:

1. absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement.

2. lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting.

"Reverse" apathy and these definitions are turned to their opposite, quite a revealing moment!

So going back to the question...what do we misunderstand about Politics...

We believe that politics are creating a separation between us and the issue we disagree on, and we believe we can change beliefs about the "thing" with our stance. But if we look at the first card....and we are moving away from everything. What we are really doing is separating people into factions.

The issue becomes secondary to how we feel about the person delivering it, and we may become reactionary to the person rather than the complaint. Why? Because of our emotions. There are a lot of cups here!

But because this 4 of Cups is reversed, another misunderstanding is that we can convince others of our political beliefs by making an offering. We may find that some people pull back, that they become bolder in their own beliefs. And that while we believe that our political beliefs prevent us from looking at something  (8 of Cups), that what it really does is force us to dwell on it (we think we're holding back from the offering, but we're actually creating heavy focus on it).  Like the photograph at the top of this page, there is more talking than listening going on. We keep our blinders on to hold fast to our beliefs without any interference from others' opinions.

Because these are both cup cards, politics hit the heart. They are something people become very emotional and sensitive about, so it is not just logical concepts being tossed around, feelings get hurt, as emotional back-up can cause serious uprisings. In other words, "Politics are something people  take personally."

What two cards do you receive if you explore the meaning of politics?

How would you interpret them?
