After many months of planning, yesterday was our Michiana pagan picnic at Oxbow Park in Goshen. It was a soggy day but the rain was deeply needed and it brought cooler temperatures at the end of a pretty hot week. Despite the rain, and perhaps because of it, we had just over 50 attendees...not bad for a first-time attempt to reconcile the breech in the pagan community.
The fellowship was great! We had a couple completely new people who saw the flyer at a local bead store while the rest either heard about it from a Yahoo! group post or Witchvox. We did blanket the area with mailings to the (hopefully) pagan-friendly stores, churches, and coven groups so it was kind of a let down that we only got one couple through those means but they are one couple more who now know there is a solid community of pagan believers in the Michiana area.
As the day progressed into evening and the group was winding down, we held an esbat ritual with those who wanted to join the circle. What a great experience to have those moments with our new-found pagan friends as we shared sacred yet jovial moments connecting with deity.
When our core group gathered in the impending nightfall, we couldn't help but smile over the success of our efforts. We look forward to hosting another picnic next year and hope that even more pagans will attend.
Blessed Be!
