I have always admired groups that honor their elderly; however age does not bring wisdom. In fact, time and time again I have witnessed the 'Elders' being the root of the problem rather than the solution when there is turmoil in a community.
Perhaps because they are set in their ways or have been around longer to see more (to gossip about); what are your views on Elders being considered 'wise' based on time-served?
In your tradition, are elders to be respected regardless if they have earned it? Do you have an issue with putting an elder 'in check'?

I see this most common in the Pagan Community. Elders are in place, based on age and achievement in the community. These same Elders are the shit-disturbers. Why keep them around? Out of respect? Out of honor? Even when they are destroying what everyone has worked so hard to build? Why this 'turn the other cheek' mentality?
I know wisdom does not come with age, it comes from knowledge and experiance. I may be biased because i am young but i know i'm not wise lol, there are many old people who are not wise at all, sometimes they are seen as wise but this usually comes because of being stubborn. Us youngens might be to quick to 'pull the trigger' but the old and stubborn are continuously mistaken for wise without it ever being proven, mainly because they can have an overpowering presence. An example of this is a Christian teacher at my school, i walk into her classes focused and ready to have an actual discussion about 'my side of the coin' so to speak, but when the conversation starts my mind goes blank and i cant remember any facts i have learnt because she is so sure of her God and wont accept my point of view. I end up looking foolish and my peers see me as an idiot. Now, does this make her wise? or is she just stubborn? Most people cant see the striking line between the two for an older person, but stubborn younger people are seen as idiotic and unwilling to learn. Now, through these interactions with her i have learned a few things about Christianity and its completely dedicated followers. This makes me generalise and label all Christians as 'stubborn' which i know is not true. For there are many decent men and women among its practices, but whenever i think of Christians the words 'foolish' and 'misguided' surge to my forethoughts. For many people will accept their assumptions and this makes them closed minded to the decent members who have an open mind and respect others beliefs and therefore stops their learning for that aspect of the world because they become set in their ways and generalize.
I can ramble on and on but i think my point is made. =P
'Elder' needs to be a title earned by the individual, if it is not earned then it should not be given otherwise even the greatest of ideas, ideals, hierarchys, groups etc etc will be doomed to fail from the start because of an over-acceptance of the stubborn men and women in the world.
I've always had a problem with blanket respect for any group or type of person. This past summer I had a run in with a so called elder, who was nothing more than a mean old woman who thinks to highly of herself. I'm not finding much to respect about her even though she is considered a respected elder in the tribe. I prefer to keep my distance though than to put her in her place since I don't really know what that place would be.
