Why bother having these three things!

ok my turn to rant thou I usually keep Ranting to myself and to a Min.
anyways here goes

1: The UN why bother having this origizination just like the League of Nations was useless against Stalinist Russia,Imperial Japan, Nazi Germany and Italy. the UN which is in basics just the same thing with different name and a slightly different accord they do nothing to prevent hunger and warfare (the stat of over 200 minor wars in the world today prove this) and in some ways they have infact interfered in crisis making situation wrost not better.

2: The Olympic Games theres three reasons (in my opnion) why shouldnt bother. A: cheating and drug use of compating countries and the judging system is unscaled and outdated. B: a superpower can dictate who watchs the flame as what occurred today in Tieland and the Chinese preventing them from competing if any superpower can do this then its not a game of peace and understanding C: the coin and wasted on olympic villages and arenas?

and lastly and this is prob the one that going to have you call me inhumane and everything else under the sun

3: Feeding 3rd world countries. why not let nature take its course its natural balance of things of course its not the PC thing to do and have they (3rd world) achieved anything overall with afew wells schools etc the natural balance hasnt been shifted really and besides its a grab by most "christian" originizations to funnel money into their coffers and get converts for their dying religion AND lastly there are millions of street people in developed countries that freeze and strave to death every year but we remove funding from social programs, mental health programs, etc yet we have no problem falling into guilt of listening to those ads to adopt some child in a 3rd world country and send 10.00 a month when we should fund the programs for the poor and street people in developed countries Hell we should put more money into animal shelters and preventing cruelity to animals than to the 3rd world.

I really gota not watch the news and mute the ads on tv. Im starting to agree with the Amish and Polymists(sp) on their stants of no tv!!
bitch time over before I think up another thing to bitch about

Do you happen to remember the US sending the so-called "Dream Team" to the Olympics? A team of professional athletes participating in a competition that is supposed to be for amateurs? (Amateurs with deep pockets, to be able to afford fancy equipment and time off from work, to be sure, but without corporate sponsors.) I was so ashamed of my country for such flagrant abuse of the Olympic spirit, and of the Olympic committee for allowing it to happen, that that was the last year I watched the games!

The olympics has not been an amateur event since 1952.
In 1986, the IOC changed its charter to allow "all the world's great male and female athletes to participate."
Edit to add - the charter was changed because of the dominance of Communist athletes during the 70's and 80's.

MM :)

This is a really interesting topic (I love the highland games by the way! I've never been to one but have seen coverage of competitions when I've been home, you're right when you say it is a real Olympics)! I'm afraid I'm one of the optimistic types, however. I believe in all three of the factors you state.....just not in their current situation! Please, don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you all that in their current state, all three situations are just word of mouth and are completely inadequate! But, if they could only be fixed up and operated the way they were originally intended to be, they could be some great things in a world filled with such terrible things. I'm in the sport and entertainment world and have loved everything concerned with the Olympics (until Greece and China, but that's for obvious reasons). The Sydney Olympics gave me a great insight as to how it can bring communities together and remind everyone what the true spirit of humanity is. Who cares who wins and loses, that's not really what the Olympics is about.

I guess I have a question to add to the "Why bother" question....how can these three things be fixed so they actually do what was originally intended....or is fixing them beyond anyone's capability now? What a sad thought :(

:) MM My lady,

I was a track and field athlete for many years as well as a determined field hockey player lol :) I do see your point that it does matter who wins when it comes to the athletes :D I couldn't agree more! But they are the players on the stage and it's importance is on a completely different level. A lot of the athletes have to rely on their success to obtain sponsorships (not an easy task) so that they can afford to compete at such a prestigious event. Most of the athletes I knew had jobs in the "real world" (their words not mine lol) and trained and traveled through the least expensive means possible whenever they had a spare moment. The only ones who were truly "professional" (i.e. paid for playing) in the UK were the football (soccer) players....everyone else had to work for a living!

I'm not sure if things have changed since I left the world of competition, but my friends tell me it is still the same...poor things :(

I think it's worse!! I did long jump, high jump and relays, softball throw, too. My Da was the girls track coach and I am an only child,so yea, good thing I was a tom boy and loved sports!! Very true about the world stage, though, very true! Hell, they cant even get the torch there without incident,I do however question the wisdom of having the olympics in China to begin with

We are track and field sisters!!!! I did exactly the same things! Long and triple were my forte' however....I was a multi-eventer (Heptathlon). The softball thing is mostly definitely American lol, didn't experience that until I came over here :)

The Torch has only had this much trouble this year....most other years it has made the trip without incident and has achieved its purpose...I agree with the reasons it's had the trouble, though wish it wasn't the case.....people seem to be forgetting the true spirit of the Olympics and everyone will suffer for it :( China should not have been given the Olympics, simple as that. It was a political decision (as all Olympic decisions are unfortunately) and is one that could destroy it :( you would have thought they had learned their lesson after the Berlin Olympics between the World Wars.....alas, political memory is short and rose-tinted.

Blessed Be!
