Hello again all

I was wondering what bad habits you have broken and the method you did so (be it through magic or plain ol' nose to the grindstone). I have a couple bad habits:

-I bite my nails

-I have the hardest time getting into a routine (instead I just want to play instead of doing house work...I know naughty Shauna lol)

Those are a couple...I am positive if I think a bit more I will think of many others!

What is some advise you can lend in starting new habits and ending bad ones?

Blessed Be!

~~Shauna~~

I have a bad habit of smoking.. I would love to stop. I have tried just about everything. Anyone have any other suggestions. And when I get upset or angry.. LOL, especially at work.. I growl, like a bear. And sometimes it is really so loud that and I even embarrass myself... cant seem to quit. I guess it is better than cursing. And twirling my hair.. I do that a lot. Sometimes I get it knotted between my fingers. I have been doing that for years..

I twirl my hair too! But I know that's a learned habit, my mom does it too. Hmm, growling...I don't have that problem, but I do curse a lot and would like to minimize that as well. (See told ya if you gave me more time I would think of other nasty habits of mine lol)

The growling came one day.. when I had a rude customer, so instead of cussing his butt out. I just growled, been a habit since.(lol) I probably have a few more too.

I guess that is a better alternative! Cussing out a customer usually ends up with you in some kind of trouble...at least growling they won't outright ask you about most of the time lol

I was able to stop smoking for awhile using the tarot card Strength in a spell. I printed the card out so as not to ruin my personal deck, wrote the habit I wanted to stop on the back of it, made a candle, burned the card, rubbed the candle in the ashes and burned the candle for 8 minutes for 8 days. I actually stopped for 4 months straight, but then tragedy struck and I started back.

Cracking my knuckles comes to mind and i am trying to stop that although all i have is will power the same goes for eating to much most of the time i just eat for the sake of it or because i am bored.

That's it for bad habits didn't i do well :)

Ask yourself why did I develope it? What is the trigger? What causes me to respond in this way?, this is the identification, next seek to replace it with a better response, also instead of calling it a "bad" habit which is really a moral judgement, refer to it as an "undesired" one, repeat to yourself, " I really have no desire to have no desire to (name activity) any longer" these are simple ways to help gain better mastery of yourself for yourself. I sincerely hope this helps. Joe

Wow, this is a really good suggestion. I think I may try it...I'm an *underage* smoker. I know, no lectures please...But I got with my best friend and we quit for a month or so and promised each other we wouldn't do it anymore. Then she died August of 2007 and I started again. I've tried to kick it cold turkey and replacing it with something else, but nothing worked.

I hope this helps, thanks for suggesting it. =]

Perhaps it will help if you understood the physiology behind habits. When we have an experience of something an electrical impulse in our brain is fired. The synapse that forms is strengthened each and every time we experience that habit. With each firing, the synapse grows stronger...like a muscle being exercised. That's why old habits die very hard because our brain is used to firing off in that direction and the connection is VERY strong. To break a habit, you must get your brain to fire in another direction. Its not an easy thing to do with life-long habits. But each time you get your brain to fire in the new direction its connection grows strong and the old connection grows weaker until eventually it withers away. Again, its like muscles. If you work them out, they grow stronger. If you don't, they wither away.

So we're evolvin these bad habits? Thats pretty interestin, think y'could pass them onto yer kids? I understand "monkey see monkey do" but actually evolvin th habit itself as genes? would that mean we become "ill" if we stop them? or is that what withdrawal is about?
Its a fascinatin thought....
What happens if'n these "bad" habits y've stopped suddenly appear when yer in a highly stressfull or perhaps curiously uplifted one?
