Yesterday I saw a friend who I hadn't seen in about a year. Anyway, she looked slender and I told her she looked good. Cutting to the chase, she started talking about the Master Cleanse Diet that "helped" her loose the baby weight. So as she continued to sing this diet's praises, I couldn't help but wonder how she could fast for 10 days and workout. I asked and she sort of mumbled something that didn't sound like the diet interferred with her workout.

I'm not a fan of diets. The only diet I believe in is the everyday, healthy eating, but I'm curious about fasting diets. What are your experiences with fasting diets? Did you continue to workout while fasting? Did you keep the weight off or did it come back?

I am not a fan of fasting diets either Lobita.

The Hare and the Toroise comes to mind. Slow and steady wins the race.
I think about my sister who needed knee surgery after a few years of running and I think.. hmm perhaps knees aren't designed to run all the time. I will walk and they will last longer.

I have fasted for 2 days at a time only twice tho. (excluding the 40 hour famine) Both times it was specifically to starve the body of addictions ie dairy, fats, white carbs or sugar. I find its an effective way to give the body a break. During that time I make sure I still drink plenty of water and I make sure that I will not be physically very active - just normally so.

Having lost 50kg the hard way (healhy, balanced eating and exercise) I have worked out that all my diets before did not work because as soon as you start eating again you pack on all the weight again and more.
Shakes and appetite supression tablets gives me the heebies cause they don't teach you what is healthy.

I recommend the longtern healthy maintainable lifestyle rather than dangerous unsupervised fasts.

Yep, slow and steady wins the race. Short cuts may work for the short term, but it's the long haul effort that truly pays off.

I tried the Atkins diet for about 5 days many years ago. It's not a fasting diet per se, but I nearly passed out from trying to workout with the lack of carbs. Not being a big meat eater and spending a lifetime avoiding excessive fats, the diet offered me nothing but lightheadedness in my kickboxing class, bad breath (keytones), and a growing dislike for meat. LOL

I have just been studying more Essene books - The Essene Gospel of Peace Book 1 and also Book 4 The teachings of the Elect.
http://www.thenazareneway.com/essene_gospel_of_peace_book_4.htm
and
http://www.thenazareneway.com/essene_gospel_of_peace_book1.htm

Essense were the pagans (country folkmagick) of the turn of the milenimum in Isreal. 0 AD
In both books 1 and 4 there are cleansing rituals that include fasting as a main componant.
Book 4 says Use the Elements of Earth Mother
Air - be sky clad and outside in a forest - breathe deeply followed by
Water - swim with full imersion at the same speed as your breath and it then says to give yourself an enima
Sunshine is needed for 7 days
and this fast will detox 1 year for each day of the fast. After 7 days the seeker is cautioned to go thier way and "sin" (polute thier body which is thier earthly temple) no more.
This was prescribed for really sickly people who had goo coming out of every orifice.
Always eating the gifts of our Earthly Mother - all manner of fruits and vegetables, the grasses of the feilds the palitable milk of beasts and the honey of bees.
It goes on to say that meat is dead food and the Life force can only dwell in a temple of Life.

For your friend ...
There is something eating at her guts, perhaps.
Post natal time is a huge adjustment period.
Counselling for your friend would be an option to bring it out of her so she can return to a healthy alive state.
Perhaps her worms are metaphorical - pains of the mind rather than of the body. same-same.
Fasting is the natural way to rid the body of worms when they have no more food they leave - however they have fits and cause pains first. And they need something of earth - a food source - to draw them out and then they can be squished. There's quite a detailed account in Book 1 of the healer drawing out a worm from a man's gut after the man had fasted for 3 days the worm came out to get some of the rancid milk put in front of the man.
Fascinating and Wow all at once.

I don't know how you can keep that going! I saw the BBC program "Super Skinny Me" and one of the women trying to get to a size 00 (she was about a US size 10) in 6 weeks did the Master Cleanse. It involved drinking these "lemonades" with cayenne pepper and honey . The woman lost a load of weight, but she was ravenous and super grouchy all the time. She did work out, but said she got really tired. Eventually she gave in and binged.

Fasting has its place in some spiritual practices and medical intervention. When fasting is used for weightloss, I feel the process, intent, and body gets abused. I also read on someone's blog how they tried the Master Cleanse diet and they spent most of their time obsessing over food. When the process was over, they ended up gaining the weight they lost plus a bit extra.

The Master Cleanse Diet is just that a cleanse. It is not recommended for losing weight. Perhaps she looks slender because she lost the baby weight. Know what i mean? You will lose weight, but that is not what is trying to be accomplished on the program.
It would really depend on the workout. Let's think about it.....an Olympic athlete that works out extensively wouldn't be using the cleanse. A person who exercises little to moderately would. Following my thought process on that?
So if someone is thinking they are going to do the cleanse and poof be exercising like they are training for a marathon is unrealistic.
And on the other foot if you are not active at all and try to start an exercise program while on the cleanse you will probably have trouble as well.
Also back to your friend's situation. Determination of wanting to get back to pre baby weight is a motivating factor. None of us can really lose the weight until we decide that is what we are going to do. It's an interactive process. BUT sometimes people need that little shove in the right direction at the start or at the end. To either get them going or to get that last bit of stubborn weight off.

You can not fast and workout because the body nededs fuel. If yopur not putting in the fuel,it uses the reserves, first the fat then the muscle, not a good idea to do both.Fasting is ok,but not if your thinking your body can still do the aerobics, weight traing,yoga..fasting is for spiritual purposes mainly and i dont believe should be used to lose weight. I am a nationally certified aerobics instructor and trainer, not only is it unhealthy to starve your body and keep pushing it,it is extremeley unsafe, too,

I agree with you 100%, Celticlass, regarding fasting and working. My friend regularly works out at the gym, so I found it odd that she fasted and negated her regular gym regimine. There seems to be this trend happening where people are fasting to lose weight/spot reduce. I've read blogs where people followed some fasting diet and attempted to maintain their regular workout routines.

Much better to eat smaller meals and work out a wee bity less, than fast. I believe fasting is for spiritual purposes, not to lose weight. It is not healthy for that and the weight comes back anyway.

Fasting has helped me lose alot of weight, I have used protein shakes to fast on,
and I have stayed on it for as long as 3 weeks , and I lost 40 pounds , however the hard thing is once I started eating again!, I gained most of the weight back.

Yes, my friend...when we start to eat (bad usually) again, the weight does come back. However, I have found that with the use of protein shakes (which is good in a weight management program), that our weight comes back more severe after we have been using the weigh protein. So...I guess the idea is to keep with the shakes, exercise, control meals and keep on it! lol...yeah, easier said than done... ;-)

This is my point. The weight will come back and 99.99% always does. Protein shakes are meant to be a supplement, not a replacement, unfortunately, folks use them for this. When we weight lift,we use them as supplements also. Nothing but protein shakes for three weeks is scarey!! No amount iof weight loss would be worth the health risk,in my professional opinon,as a nationally certified aerobics instructor and fitness trainer..
