Help me understand. What is the Astral Plane?

The belief in the Astral plane is a popular belief among pagans. I reject this theology, but I also want to gain an understanding as to why other people believe it. It seems to pop up in all the various discussions. There is also a diverse understanding and belief of what this 'Astral' plane is. This discussion can include astral travel, as well as a generalized discussion about the astral plane.

Wiki Page on the Astral Plane

Skeptical Inquiry Questions:
1. Do you feel the Wiki page accurately describes the astral plane? If not, why and what edits would you offer?

2. When did you first hear of the astral plane, and what sources were used to research it further?

3. What is the basis for your belief in the astral plane?

4. Do you feel that your peers accept your belief in the astral plane?

5. If they reject it, how does this make you feel about your personal beliefs?

1. The Astral Plane cannot be visited via lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is a self-contained experience, all within one's own mind. It's a DREAM, fer cryin' out loud. Other than that, a semi-thorough scan of the page reveals no other real problems (for me, at least).
2. Uhm. My first discovery of the Astral plane was in junior high, when I found a book called "Projection of the Astral Body". First library book I ever stole...XD I'll try to find the author for you; I have all my books packed up at the moment.
3. I've been there. My friend and I have visited the same area at the same time, with no personal details set beforehand. Last time, we went to the Parthenon, in Greece. I was able to tell her the color of her robe, as well the color and style of her hair. BTW, she's in Ohio. I'm in Alabama.
4. Dunno. I know at least some of my peers do. Others don't
5. If they reject it, then that's their choice. My rejection of their Christianity doesn't affect their beliefs.

Help any?

I believe that the book I cited was "Projection of the Astral Body" by Sylvan J. Muldoon and Hereward Carrington, published by Kessinger Publishing, LLC. I'm not sure whether or not that was the same book, but it is the only exact title match I found on Amazon.

Sin, can you explain why you don't believe it exists? And random question, do you believe in spirits, auras, energy manipulation, etc. etc. etc?

I don't believe in spirits, and what you believe energy manipulation/auras are may differ from my own belief. I see these things, as emotional projections; static from brain to brain, and body radiations. I do acknowledge the power of the human ability; and reject that this ability comes from an external sources such as deity, the all, or the 'spirit realm'.

We have the power, to manipulate. Whether that manipulation be by a physical act or of will.

I see the 'astral plane' as nothing more than a physiological response to influence.

"I see these things, as emotional projections; static from brain to brain, and body radiations."

I think that's the definition of an auric field. (-;
And you answered my question like I thought you would. I wanted to make sure instead of assuming what it is you believe. I'm not sure if I believe in an astral plane. I don't have enough experience in that department to believe/disbelieve in it.

Girl, you have way too much time on your hands.

Hugs.

I multi-task, and stay busy. Idle time bores me.

1. I don't see anything that I would necessarily change about the Wiki page... I may have to study a bit more of what they're saying before I could say for sure though.

2. I first heard about the astral plane when I began studying Paganism. I hadn't realized I had previously visited it until I knew what it was.

3. I've been there. One instance that was more than enough proof to me that I wasn't imagining it is when I visited a friend before I ever met her. There are other instances as well, including some where I got the astral kicked out of me, so to speak, and was actually physically sore for days.

4. I feel that some do, some possibly don't.

5. Makes no difference in any case. I don't believe everything my peers do, and don't expect them to believe everything I do. I have a brother who is Atheist, a sister who is Evangelical, another who has Buddhist/Pagan leanings (but doesn't label her path at this time), and two brothers who are Gods know what. We've all, for the most part, gotten used to the fact that we all believe different things, and (for the most part) accept that.

SIN, had you asked me this question six months ago, I would have laughed and told you that there is no such thing. As you know, I am a coldly logical scientific type of person. If it does not obey the laws of physics or fall within reasonable scientific theoretical probability, it does not exist.
That was six months ago. A certain occurrence, since, has forced me to reconsider my stance to a certain extent. This occurrence defies all scientific reason. I have been able to come to only one conclusion. There Laws out there, that we are unaware of.
Far too many people, from all walks of life, have told me about their experiences. Many have told me in confidence, unable to believe their own experience. Currently, I have no answers. The scientific community rejects the idea. This does not mean that there is NOT something out there.

I believe that the human brain is evolving at an ever-increasing rate. We are becoming entities, closer to becoming `one' with the `Awareness', which is the Universe itself. We will never be able to prove, or disprove, Astral travel in laboratories using microscopes and test tubes. Science must evolve to the extent that it uses different methods to what it uses currently. Until the day that this `new' form of science can prove, certain, that Astral travel does NOT exist, I will presume that it DOES exist.

1. The Wikipedia description is rather concise and accurate.

2. I first experienced astral projection when I was a teenager. It wasn't until a few years and a few books later that I understood my experience. As an adult I have traveled the astral plane often. The books I used for research were borrowed from a friend and a couple of them I have tucked away somewhere. If I find the books or remember the titles, I'll pass on the info.

3. Experience. At first I thought it was a product of an overactive imagination, but then I realized it was more.

4. Some people embrace it and some don't.

5. When people don't embrace my beliefs, I just shrug. To each their own. Right now I have a relative that is telling me the world is ending soon and the birds will be feasting on my fleshy parts if I don't convert. They may look at my belief in the same eyebrow raising way as I regard their beliefs. To each their own.

Good discussion, SIN.

Thank you for your contributions. All book definitions aside, what is the astral plane in your own personal opinion, and how do you get there? Is the purpose of the astral plane to observe? If not, what is the purpose of an attempt to reach the astral plane?

What is the purpose of the Universe?
